COLLEGE ROOMS  ('on-campus' accommodation)

I have block-booked rooms for LFG09 participants in several centrally located, venerable colleges. Once conference registration opens, the rooms will be available on the first-come-first-served basis. Late booking may not be possible, or may incur an extra charge which will be reflected in a higher rate.

  • All rooms are within a few minutes' walk of the conference venue.
  • All rooms are in the very heart of the old town; some may overlook courtyards, and some overlook streets. They are in modern buildings, but within the old colleges themselves, among historic buildings. You will likely have your breakfast in the old dining hall.
  • They are typical Cambridge student accommodation; although they are modern and comfortable, please don't expect high hotel standard. However, linen, towels and soap are provided, and the rooms are serviced Monday-Friday. All rooms should have access to a small shared kitchen (a so-called 'gyp-room').
  • Only SINGLE rooms are available, no double or twin rooms.
  • The earliest possible check-in date is Friday, 10 July (not all rooms), and the latest possible check-out date is Friday, 17 July.
  • Room rates, including cafeteria breakfast:

Single standard room (with washbasin; shared facilities)£45.50/night
Single en-suite room (with shower or bath)£57.00/night
Single en-suite room (with shower or bath, and a small fridge)£65.00/night

  • Optional: internet access (ethernet) is available for a one-off room connection fee of £8.00.

SPECIAL OFFER FOR STUDENT PARTICIPANTS
(limited availability)

I have been able to reserve two very basic student guest rooms (multi-bed 'dorms') at my old College, Pembroke, which are suitable for 2 or 3 students sharing. Please e-mail me if you are interested and I'll let you know whether the rooms are still available. More information:

  • Pembroke College is slightly further from Trinity than the other college rooms that I've booked for LFG09, though it is closer to the railway station where you might arrive.
  • There are two rooms: a twin room (£23/bed/night), and a 5-bed room (£20/bed/night). Ideally, they should be used by at least two people per room (i.e. not for single occupancy), so please find a friend or two to share.
  • At the moment, the rooms are available from Friday, 10 July (check-in day) until Thursday, 16 July (check-out day). If necessary, I can find out whether an additional night (Thursday night, 16 July) might be possible.
  • These are standard rooms with a washbasin. The wc and bathroom are just outside in the corridor, shared between the two rooms.
  • Ethernet or wi-fi are not available.
  • Breakfast is not included, but it is available for cash from the College servery; or you can have breakfast in one of the cafes or bakeries in town (there are a couple right outside the College, including a very famous one, Fitzbillies). The twin room has a kettle, cups, and teabags. In the building, on other floors, you will find several small kitchens/gyp-rooms which should have some basic food preparation facilities (kettle, sink, fridge, electric rings, etc.).

Advertised price range for a double room: around £170 - £380/night.

This appears to be the best rated Cambridge hotel, with quirky architectural features, stylish bedrooms, hand-sprung mattresses, Egyptian linen, 'monsoon' power showers, great food and wine, and high speed wireless internet access available in all guest rooms. It is located just south of the city centre, not far from the railway station, and within reasonable walking distance of Trinity College (i.e. about 0.6 mile which, according to Google Maps, should take about 11-12 minutes to walk). I would recommend asking for a garden room, since the street can be quite busy and therefore noisy. I couldn't find any information on the web about air conditioning, though I hope they do have it (even though it is not common in the UK since the summers here can be quite feeble).

Doubletree by Hilton

Advertised price range for a double room: around £250 - £300/night.

This hotel is more predictable, modern, with great views of the river (as it is located by the river), and a bit closer to Trinity - so less to walk. Both wireless and wired internet are available. I've read some reviews and in general they are quite good - though avoid room 118, as apparently it has a noise problem (one can hear the beeping of the dishwasher at the end of its cycle in the kitchen!).

Crowne Plaza Hotel

Advertised price range for a double room: around £150 - £300/night.

One of the most central hotels in Cambridge which is also the closest to Trinity College. A glance at reviews suggests that is probably quite average as far as hotels go, but should be comfortable. It is modern and has both high speed wireless internet and air conditioning (in case we did have a boiling hot summer for a change). It is located on a busy street and above the entrance to a large car park, so it may be good to specifically request a quiet room (in particular, one away from the car park entrance).
